ECE Alumnus & Entrepreneur Sachio Semmoto Delivers Doctoral Address at UF Spring Commencement

Sachio Semmoto, Ph.D. (ME ‘68; Ph.D. ‘71),  ECE alumnus and world-renowned entrepreneur, delivered the commencement address at the UF Spring Doctoral Commencement Ceremony Thursday, May 1. The Doctoral Commencement Ceremony recognizes candidates from all colleges except the Levin College of Law and the College of Dentistry, whose commencements are held later in the spring.

Semmoto spoke eloquently and inspirationally about the power of entrepreneurship and innovation and the importance of education. He shared his experiences and provided three life lessons learned during his career:

  • Believe in yourself and ignore doubters
  • Listen, learn, and draw strength from others
  • Be a risk taker. Taking risks will benefit you and the world.

“The world needs you. We need your ideas, innovations, and creations. And we are so excited that you are now ready to share them. But, graduates, know this: taking risks isn’t just about money, prestige, or personal satisfaction. It’s about the betterment of society and the human condition.”

Sachio Semmoto, Ph.D.

Semmoto was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Technology by the University of Florida.
