Sean Meyn, Ph.D., the Robert C. Pittman Eminent Scholar Chair in Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been awarded the college’s Teacher/Scholar of the Year Award.

“I am honored to receive the Teacher/Scholar of the Year Award from the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering,” he said. “It is especially meaningful because my activities are centered on integrating research and teaching, with the goal of preparing students to contribute to emerging areas in learning and control.”

He said his teaching and research are closely connected; his focus is on control systems, stochastic processes and reinforcement learning.

“My main application area is both control and economics of energy systems,” he said. “I emphasize strong analytical foundations alongside modern applications, while my research seeks to better understand the stability and performance of learning algorithms.”

He launched the Workshop on Cognition & Control (C^3) at UF, which gathers researchers and students to explore ideas at the intersection of control, machine learning and information theory.

Meyn received bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and his doctorate in electrical engineering from McGill University, Canada.
