Musings from ECE Chair John G. Harris for the Summer 2021 issue of ECE News

ECE 4th year PhD student Brandon Parks was recently informed that he is the recipient of a prestigious T32 Fellowship from the Neuromuscular Plasticity (NMPT) Program, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Jie Fu is an assistant professor with the Department of Robotics Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She presents “Assured Autonomy in an Open Dynamic World with Integrated Formal Methods” Tuesday, May 11 at 1:00pm.

Associate Professor Greg Stitt is the recipient of a Ruth and Joel Spira Excellence in Teaching Award. This honor was first revealed at the IEEE Spring Banquet last month, with Dr. Susan Hakkarainen, Joel and Ruth’s daughter, in attendance.

Associate Professor Dr. Domenic Forte has been awarded the Steven A. Yatauro Faculty Fellowship. The endowed fellowship was created to honor a faculty member who continues to inspire students and is attempting to solve society’s most challenging problems.

ECE students showcased their capstone projects during Senior Design Expo, held on Thursday, April 22.

Traditionally, the end of the Spring semester brings the Spring Banquet, hosted by IEEE along with WECE and HKN. The event usually features updates from the department and from students groups, along with some bad puns and a speaker from industry. ECE PhD student Ulbert (Joey) Botero was recently awarded 2020 Outstanding Paper at the Electronic Device Failure Analysis Society (EDFAS) Virtual Workshop, held December 7–9 of last year for his paper, “Automated Via Detection for PCB Reverse Engineering.”

Assistant Professor Roozbeh Tabrizian has been selected to receive a  2021 DARPA Director’s Fellowship, following his receipt of the 2019 DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA).

An article recently published in the Academic Times profiled exciting new technology patented by researchers at the Florida Institute for Cybersecurity (FICS) Research which promises a new way to detect recycled and counterfeit electronic parts. The technology created by ECE Associate Professor Domenic Forte and ECE Associate Professor Nima Maghari makes supply chains more secure, protects consumer safety and runs at almost zero cost.
